Edward "Ed" Monaghan, a first generation Irish American, lifelong Philadelphia resident and proud 1947 graduate of Roman Catholic High School, passed away on the morning of Saturday, November 18, 2017. Ed, the youngest son of Sarah and Frank Monaghan, is survived by his loving wife, Peg (nee Thiel), of 59 years, who he often referred to as the most beautiful woman in the world. Ed was also preceded in death by his brothers; Frank, John, Joseph, Peter and sisters; Rose and Veronica. Ed was the proud father of 6 children; Margaret, Edward,Jr., Patricia Schwartz, John (Denise), Don (Trish), and Susanne Tuckerman (Mike), uncle of Elizabeth and many other nieces and nephews and the beloved Pop-Pop of 11; Maggie, Katie, Casey, Ashley, Mikey, Eddie, Timmy, Patrick, Brendan, Hailey and Grace. From there he went on to venture positions such as dry cleaner, house painter, driver and mailman. At the age of 23, he was called to serve his country with the Army during the Korean War by building bridges for 18 months along the Rhine River in Germany. When he returned from the military, Ed began his adventures as a 32 year veteran of the Philadelphia Police Department, where while walking his beat, fell in love with the girl who worked at The Boat Shop, who would later become his wife. Following his retirement from the Philadelphia Police Department, Ed went to work as a Guard at Temple University Woodhaven Center for another 20 years. An avid and enthusiastic story teller, Ed would be hard pressed not to find common ground with anyone he met. In his retired years he spent many evenings at Barnes & Noble acting as a matchmaker and counselor. He shared his thoughts and Irish luck as an avid letter writer and shared many a lottery ticket with friend and stranger alike. His stories, love and laughter will be greatly missed by all.
