Hilda Kathleen Carr

Hilda Kathleen Carr, age 76, died peacefully in her own home on Thursday, January 23, 2020, surrounded by family and friends. Hilda was the second of seven children born to Kathleen Carr (nee Tumulty) and Francis Xavier Carr. Hilda is survived by four brothers; Frankie (Margie), Jimmy, Bobby and Danny (BJ); one sister, Carolynn; her nieces, Jeanine Carr, Suzanne Carr Chestnut and Megan Chestnut; her nephews, Matthew Carr (godson) and Billy Chestnut, and many loving cousins. She is preceded in death by her parents and brother Edward Carr. Hilda grew up in Fairmount, attended St. Francis Xavier School and graduated as valedictorian from John W. Hallahan Catholic Girls High School in 1961. She received her degrees in the field of education from St. Joseph University and Temple University. Hilda devoted her entire forty year teaching career to serving the students, teachers and principals in the schools of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia. As a result of Hilda's time as a teacher, reading specialist and director of the RITE/MERIT project, the reading ability and education of thousands of students in the Philadelphia area was greatly improved. In 2014 Hilda was inducted into the J. W. Hallahan Hall of Fame. Relatives and friends are invited to the Funeral Mass on Wednesday, January 29, 2020, at 11:00 a.m. in St. Helena Church, 1489 DeKalb Pike, Blue Bell, PA 19422. Prior to Mass there will be a viewing in Church 9:30 - 11:00 a.m. Burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery in Yeadon on Friday at 1:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Helena Parish (address above) in memory of Hilda.
