Maria Roca

We sadly say goodbye to Maria (Miss Mary Roca) who was born in 1927 in her beloved Cayey, Puerto Rico and died on June 21, 2017 She was a mother, grandmother, friend, aunt, and let's not forget, an excellent cook. She was a warrior. In 1952 she migrated to the US and made a life in Philadelphia for herself and her children. She was a member of the Spanish Chapel (LaCapilla Hispana), in the Spring Garden section of the City. La Milagrosa (as it became known) was a place that centered our Latino community. It was also the church where her sons (Hector and Jorge) served as altar boys and several of her children and grandchildren where baptized. There she was the member of the choir and of "Las Hijas de Maria". She was also a "cursillista". She was a God loving woman. Maria provided for her children unselfishly always making sure there was food on the table and that her children's needs were met. She taught her daughters to be strong independent women in this world of men. She was an excellent Mother and loving Grandmother/great-grandmother who was adored by them in return. All who came in contact with her grew to love her as well. Maria worked hard her entire life in several Philadelphia factories as well as bartending at the Spanish American Social Club. She could also party with the best of them filling her home on weekends with friends, food, music and laughter. She had a generous heart, a wonderful sense of humor and great sense of style. Her home was always impeccable, warm and welcoming. Maria is survived by her daughters, Evelyn Romero, Mildred Roca, Angeles (Angie) Roca (Rexach), and Milagros (Mili) Roca and her son-in-law Carlos. Also survived by seven (7) grandchildren, (20) great-grandchildren and (3) great-great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Maria loved her children fiercely and was loved by many. She had a full life with sorrows, but, also great joys. Her wish is to be remembered with joy and happiness. May she be with her God in Peace. Relatives and friends are invited to her Funeral Mass at 10 a.m. on Friday, June 30 in St. Peter the Apostle Church, 1019 N. 5th Street, Phila., PA.
