Mr. Walter "Popi" John Johnson
November 21, 1950 - March 7, 2022
Walter was born November 21, 1950 in Philadelphia, PA. Walt was born and raised in Philadelphia graduating from Ben Franklin High School in 1968. Walter Johnson known as Walt to friends and Popi to his family was a magnificent human being. Walt had a love for animals including his dog Jerry and a love for people. He was a hard worker, working 2-3 jobs since the age of 13. He had an infectious laugh, radiant smile, and twinkle in his eye and a great sense of humor. Walter Johnson passed away peacefully on March 7, 2022 at Einstein Hospital at the age of 71. Pre-ceded in death by his Sister Ester Torres (Sissy), and by his mother Doris Johnson. He leaves behind his Sister Leisa Johnson and her 2 sons; Joshua and Justin King, Aunt Jeanne, Daughter Rita Schultz and her children; Richard McMickens, Angelique & Jasmine Hill. Longtime Friend and mother of his daughter Jeannie Schultz, and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and 3 great-grandchildren. If you knew him, you loved him you knew his eyes crinkled when he smiled, but if they weren’t crinkling watch out. This man lived a full life and could tell you every detail of that life. He was a man of the neighborhood and so much so that he was dubbed “The Mayor”. He was fiercely proud of his family and they lovingly called him “Popi”. There wasn’t a man alive that was more generous than Walt. Whether making hungry people food (French bread pizza was his specialty), giving out candy and cookies to all the neighborhood kids or opening his wallet to anyone that needed it. Walt would give his last dollar and the shirt off his back. He collected $2 bills and Susan B. Anthony coins and would give them to parents of new babies. There is no one like Walter Johnson and there never will be. Rest in Peace, Mayor Walt.
