Frances Dusza Hunsberger

Frances Dusza Hunsberger passed peacefully on Easter morning. During the final weeks, her family surrounded Frances with love, prayer, and Polka music, bringing a smile to her face and sparking memories of younger years. With spunk and her sense of humor until the end, Frances was occasionally heard saying “now scram” after someone attended to her physical needs. A resident of Hatfield Township for many years, Frances was preceded in death by her husband John R. (Bob) Hunsberger, infant son Joseph Russell, and all twelve of her siblings. She is survived by eight children, Betty Ann (Gerard), Mary Lou, Linda (Rick), John (Dawn), James, Cheryl, Donna, Karen (Chris). She is also survived by 14 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Frances was born on March 26, 1929, at the family farm in Lower Salford Township. The youngest daughter of Frank and Anna Dusza, Frances was a keeper of the family stories and loved to share memories of growing up during the Great Depression as part of a large Polish family. Frances received a diploma after completing eight years at the Lower Salford School and studied to earn her GED many years later. As a young adult, she rode to Lansdale with her sisters where she worked retail and factory jobs until gaining employment at Hanson’s Textile in Hatfield. She left Hanson’s to raise her children but returned years later and retired when the factory closed. Fran and Bob started dating after a “Ladies Choice” while roller skating, married in 1952, and celebrated their 66 th anniversary before Bob’s death. Family meals were a priority for Frances. She was the supervisor every summer, taking her children to local farms and markets in search of the freshest produce which they canned for winter meals. She relaxed by doing the TV Guide weekly crossword, sitting in a lawn chair in the sun, or with Bob watching the sunset over the farmer’s field at the back edge of her property. Over the years, Frances and Bob spent countless hours around the kitchen table, playing pinocle with relatives. Frances remained sharp and competitive, still winning many rounds with her children during her final years. After retiring, she and Bob added Scrabble to their daily routine, spending many afternoons at the kitchen table, letters scattered between them in a friendly rivalry. In their retirement years, Frances and Bob kept busy by frequenting yard sales and thrift stores, looking for collectibles. They loaded a small maroon van and set up tables at flea markets, selling their wares for a modest profit and enjoying chats with fellow vendors and repeat customers. Their mornings always ended with lunch at a local diner. The couple often spent their anniversary week at Myrtle Beach, combing the sands for seashells. Vacations to visit their children and grandchildren took them to other states as well, where they enjoyed sightseeing, family time, and the joy of watching new generations grow. Frances was a member of Saint Maria Goretti Church, where she sang in the choir for many years and helped with the annual clothing collection. Friends and relatives are invited to services at St. Maria Goretti Church in Hatfield on April 16, with a viewing at 10 am and funeral Mass at 11:00. Interment will be at Washington Crossing National Cemetery at the convenience of the family. Donations in memory of Frances may be to a hunger relief organization or your local food bank.
